This
beautiful butterknife was carved by Swedish mastercraftsman Willie
Sundqvist. The photograph was taken when he visited the Flint Mill in
October 2002 to run a pair of courses on spoon carving and bowl
carving. Note the detailed patterning on the handle, carved by a
technique that Willie calls carved engraving. This is
effectively taking out a v-shaped sliver of wood using the tip of a
knife. More difficult than it sounds! |

This
spoon was carved by Peter Toolan, a recent participant on a
spooncarving course at the Flint Mill. Peter has used apple wood with a
nod to the fruit of the apple tree at the end of the handle

The
product of another spooncarving course participant, Nigel Goodfellow
and an image of finished spoon he started on our September 2007 course.
A really interesting relationship between the bowl and the handle of
this spoon, carved, I think, from birch. |

Sue
Holden's beautiful strainer won first prize for non-turned treen at the
2007 Bodgers Ball, the AGM of the Association of Pole Lathe Turners,
held at Wallington Hall, Northumberland. Sue's spoon has wonderful
flowing curved lines. A well deserved winner! |
